The REAL COST of Fast Fashion and what CDF is doing to combat it this Black Friday

With Black Friday approaching this week we think it's important to highlight the issues of fast fashion, often extenuated by sales like Black Friday- the biggest discount shopping event of the year.  Popular fast fashion clothing brand Pretty Little Thing offered deals of up to 99% off, with high-heeled shoes on sale for 25p and dresses for 8p. "One buyer said on Twitter that they had made 27 orders from the brand for just 57p each, while another said they had bought 56 items for £28."- Guardian UK. This sale is disgusting in our eyes, and clearly represents how little these companies value their impact on the planet or the value of the materials and notoriously underpaid garment workers.

The Problems with Fast Fashion

Fast fashion: why your online returns may end up in landfill – and what can be done about itAs i'm sure many of you know, fast fashion is becoming an increasing problem. Fashion and its supply chain is the third largest polluting industry, after food and construction.  Despite this, 100 billion garments are produced each year with 92 million tonnes ending up in landfills. 

What's worse, is that with the constant stream of clothes, and culture of demand and daily FAD microtrends, shoppers are buying and returning more and more. The ability to online return has meant many shoppers are buying more than necessary and returning large parcels that have been found to often turn up on landfills; as it costs fast fashion retailers more to process the returns than to retain the stock!

‘Sustainability’ is the practise of creating things with the ability to be maintained at a certain rate or level, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs: for example, fast fashion and plastic (polyester) clothing are ‘unsustainable‘ because they take from the earth in a non-renewable way, meaning future generations will eventually run out of this fuel. 
At Chamiah Dewey Fashion, ‘sustainability’ and being socially responsible is at the forefront of every decision we make; from fabric choice, to manufacturing location, to postage and packaging. We care about our planet and the valuable resources it provides us, we aren’t prepared to compromise on that.

 

Our Manufacturing

Currently, all of our pieces are made by the wonderful people over at Aim Athleisure, ‘the Sample Room which specialises in the Sampling, Development and Small Batch Production of new clothing products, namely stretch and leisurewear.’ Working with Aim Athleisure has allowed us to drop our prices while keeping quality at a high standard and kept production in the UK - something we’re passionate about continuing!
